African Modernism

In February 2018, RAI co-hosted the exhibition African Modernism, The architecture of Independence,   with Goethe Institut at the Kandt House Museum. The exhibition took place in Kigali.

In the late 1950s and 1960s, most countries in Central and Sub-Saharan Africa experimented futuristic architecture which became a principal means by which the nations could express their national identities but also the difficulties and the contradictions these countries had to face. In most cases, the architects were not local but from countries such as Poland, Yugoslavia, the Scandinavian and former colonial powers. The exhibition looked at these questions as it documented buildings in the different African countries.
