RAI is preparing the diffusion of Gael Faye’s book Small Country in Kinyarwanda. The kinyarwanda version will be available online, audio, and in libraries with the printed version in collaboration with Les Editions d’En bas (Lausane). With the release of Gahugu Gato, RAI will launch its first collection called “MOYO”, specialized in the publication of books in Kinyarwanda and Swahili.
This book is already an international prize-winning bestseller in France, an evocative coming-of-age story of a young boy, a lost childhood and a shattered homeland.
Small Country describes an end of innocence as seen through the eyes of a young child caught in the maelstrom of history. A luminous novel of extraordinary power, it is a stirring tribute not only to a dark chapter in Africa’s past, but to the bright days that preceded it.
One of the main part of the project is also to diffuse Gahugu Gato to schools and prepare animations around the different themes reached in the book to raise awareness towards the young generations.
Synopsis : Back to Burundi in 1992. For young Gabriel, ten years old, the life in his comfortable expatriate neighborhood of Bujumbura with his French father, Rwandan mother, and little sister, is similar to paradise. They are happy, he and his friends spending their times sneaking cigarettes and stealing mangoes, playing around their quiet city. But dark days are coming over this small country and their peaceful life will soon shatter when Burundi, and neighboring Rwanda, are brutally hit by war and genocide.
RAI wishes to deliver the book in the rwandan high-schools at the start of the school year 2018 including a series of writing and reading workshops along with a pedagogical kit for teachers.
The translation of Gaël Faye’s book Petit Pays into Kinyarwanda was initiated by RAI, with the support of Africalia, and is jointly published by Editions de RAI and Editions d’en bas.
