Rwandan modern opera on the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda

Kwibuka 25

Umurinzi is a documentary performance based on true stories that have been entrusted to us by genocide survivors.

In the rwandan culture, the tradition requires to plant a tree where a loved one has lived or died. The tree then becomes a totem representing the dead and gone. The word “umurinzi” in itself means “guardian” in kinyarwanda language. Per se, it makes keeping  the memory of a missing one alive possible.

An opera written by Dorcy Rugamba.
